Sophie’s legacy

Meals

On our journey to improving children’s food in hospitals, we met a lovely lady called Charlotte Fairall. This is a woman on a mission – believe me, we thought we were a force to be reckoned with until we met her!

Charlotte is mum to three gorgeous girls. Tragically, her daughter Sophie developed cancer at the age of 9 and passed away aged 10.

This is her story:

Creating Change | Sophie’s Legacy

Sophie was a truly inspiring young lady who, while she was in hospital and knowing that she was dying, drew up a bucket list of what she would like to see changed about children’s experiences in hospital. This ranged from a parent or carer being fed at the same time as her – as she saw her mum either go hungry so as not to leave her alone, or spend money she could ill afford in the hospital restaurant or shops – to better, more fun food for children in hospital, improved play facilities, more funding for childhood cancers, and better-trained health professionals to recognise cancer in children sooner.

After Sophie’s passing, her mum Charlotte has continued to work tirelessly to achieve everything on Sophie’s bucket list – she even recently met the King!

We asked what meals Sophie would have liked to have been offered. The food she was given was so poor that she refused to eat it and was instead fed through a tube. Imagine the food being so bad that a child would rather have a tube inserted – this should NEVER happen, yet it did.

Sophie loved her Mexican food – so we’ve introduced a Piri Piri Chicken with Mexican Rice in her honour, along with Dirty Rice (a new one for Kay!).

A lovely Chilli with Rice and Wedges is also available, along with a vegetarian option of Veggie Chilli, Rice and Wedges.

We’re also working on more of Sophie’s favourites – Fajitas and Asian Noodles (but that’s top secret!).

While we can’t fulfil everything on Sophie’s list, we can support her legacy. Each meal sold generates a donation to her charity.
